SPRING POTLUCK DINNER SHARING GARDEN EXPERIENCES
Dear Members,
Gertrude, Cathy and myself have been looking arduously for guest speakers for our club for the May meeting. To date we have cycled through many of the available local speakers, and finding new speakers becomes increasingly hard. In fact, at one point they almost put me in a rubber suit. Things got bad. All our efforts this past month received several "No's”, a half dozen "maybes" a few "maybe next winter's” and one “Sort of, I think I kinda can do it but I am not sure, it depends on the barometric pressure”. The bottom line is we do not have a guest speaker this month despite tenacious efforts.
HOT OFF THE WIRE. We may have a speaker after all.
EXPANDING OUR LIBRARY OF USEFUL PLANTS
Geoffrey Tolle does unconventional gardening like growing seeds for oil and
textiles and he likes to use plants for food that people may not think of using.
His major interest is generally on food plants (such as native passion flower
and sweet pea leaves as green vegetables) but the topic includes fiber crops,
oil crops, and others. His philosophy is: “Rather than sitting back on
the efforts of thousands of years of plant breeding, we should be expanding
and distributing our efforts so that we have a wide range of plants to fit
an environment rather than fitting our environment to our plant crops.” This
should be a very thought-provoking topic as well as being informational.
As this is the last scheduled meeting until the fall, we've decided instead
to celebrate our club by having a potluck dinner and enjoy what I feel is
a hidden treasure of this group --: its members. I've had the best time getting
to know each of you and having you be in some way a teacher. Some of you
I don't get to see enough but that's just the way life goes. My backyard
vegetable gardening adventures are taking off at a beautifully intense level
and literally it's changing my life. I am getting myself into a whole new
heap of trouble with future gardening plans. A lot of my growth is due to
talking to many members of this fine group. So many of you are amazing personalities
and so rich in knowledge that I find you to be just as fascinating as any
guest speaker's topics.
The last pot luck dinner we had was a smash hit! So please come and celebrate
our club, bring a covered dish, your own dinnerware, pull up a chair and
share your gardening stories with a bunch of folks that have a fascination
with nature just like you do. Who knows, you just might learn something too.
We hope to see you there! Hot and cold beverages will be provided by the
Club.
We have some interesting garden tours and other pertinent activities in the
planning stages for the summer months. You will hear about these projects
soon.
We hope to see you on the 23rd. Feel free to bring a friend.
Your President, Kent Byron
